On Friday this week, 24 wineries will present 166 wines at the first Hot Red Hawke’s Bay event to be held in the region. The event is the beginning of weekend celebrations for the 20th Anniversary of Midlands Charity Wine Auction. Invitations have been spread far and wide to loyal local supporters and tickets are still available to be purchased for the four-hour event.
Guests will have an unrepeatable experience being able to try from a selection of 166 wines including Reserve Wines from most of wineries. A 2006 CJ Pask Declaration Cabernet Merlot Malbec is the oldest wine to be presented at the event.
“Although Hawke’s Bay is New Zealand’s oldest wine growing region, we are still very young in international terms and developing our red wine ageing potential is significant for our marketing efforts,” says Lyn Bevin, Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers Inc. executive officer
The famous Crossroads Talisman 2009 is also available to try. “It’s a secret blend that has never been revealed and tasting notes suggest it might be the best one yet,” says Ms Bevin.
Over 60 of the wines are Trophy or Gold Medal winners. This special event allows attendees to try wines outside their usual budget and learn more about their favourites as well.
Chardonnay and white wine lovers won’t be disappointed either, Ms Bevin states, with 28 Chardonnays to taste. Other white wines being shown are Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Viognier.
Less well known wines include the Clearview Reserve Sauvignon Gris 2010, the Esk Valley Verdelho 2010, and the Villa Maria Cellar Selection Arneis 2010.
The venue is the Black Barn Bistro and the evening “should sparkle; winemakers and grape growers will be there to help you taste and learn about the wines of Hawke’s Bay. Any questions, silly or otherwise, will be happily answered to help improve your enjoyment of Hawke’s Bay’s best.”
Public tickets are available from the wine auction website www.charitywineauction.
